Inauguration ceremony held for Showa University Cleft Lip and Palate Medical Cooperative Dispatch to Madagascar

12 Sep. 2018

On August 29, the inauguration ceremony for this year’s members of Showa University Cleft Lip and Palate Medical Cooperative Dispatch to Madagascar was held at the Hatanodai campus.
Attending the ceremony included officials from Showa University; the project's founder, Ms. Ayako Sono; chairman of the Sasagawa Memorial Health Foundation, Ms. Etsuko Kita; and staff members of the Madagascar Embassy in Japan.
Showa University will dispatch 15 people, including staff such as doctors, dentists, and nurses, undergraduate students, and graduate students. From September 12-29 they will perform surgery and treatment with local staff at Clinic Ave Maria in Antsirabe, which is about 170 kilometers south of Madagascar's capital Antananarivo.
This project has been held every year since May 2011 to help children suffering from cleft lip and palate in Madagascar, an island country in eastern Africa. This time is the eighth dispatch. Last year, the achievement so far of this medical cooperative dispatch was acknowledged and delegation representative Associate Professor Yasuyoshi Tosa received the National Order, Chevalier (Knight) class, from the Republic of Madagascar.
