THE HISTORY OF SHOWA UNIVERSITY

Showa University was founded with the aim of nurturing clinicians with a wealth of humanity and ability to achieve.

In 1928, Kamijo, Shusuke, MD PhD, in his youth, could not help but question the medical education in national universities by staff spending all day in research. He proposed the need for teaching basic clinical ability(knowledge, skill and attitude) for future physicians to be able to directly reach with their hands to elucidate the very reason of patient suffering. With colleagues in symphony, Showa Medical College was founded. Dr. Kamijo proposed 'as a good citizen / as a good human / as a good physician' to be the educational goal and with fiery passion and un-movable conviction, he devoted himself to the establishment of the ideal medical education and medical care that can be trusted by patients. Such a forerunning spirit developed into the university-founding spirit of 'Shisei Ikkan'. This spirit of always being sincere to others and viewing their standpoint is tightly intertwined in the clinical scene of today. After World War II, Showa Medical College status was changed to Showa University with the aim towards the cultivation of not only physicians but also a wide range of clinical staff and researchers. With the establishment of the 3 schools, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences, Showa University is a general medical university, which actively contributes to the development of the field of medicine.

<1928>
Foundation of Showa Medical College and opening of an affiliated hospital.

<1931>
Establishment of Nursing and Midwifery courses affiliated with the Showa Medical College.

<1946>
Showa Medical college status changed to Showa Medical University.

<1951>
Opening of Karasuyama(Psychiatric)Hospital affiliated with Showa Medical University.

<1959>
Establishment of Doctoral course in the Medical Research Department of the Showa University Graduate School.

<1964>
The name Showa Medical University was Changed to Showa University School of Medicine The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Nursing College,affiliated with the School of Medicine were established.

<1965>
In Fujiyoshida-City, at the base of Mt. FuJi，Fujiyoshida Campus was opened for humanity education by having all students stay at the dormitory.

<1969>
Establishment of Master Course in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Department of the Showa university Graduate School.

<1974>
Establishment of Doctorate of Philosophy Course in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Research. Department of the Showa University Graduate School.

<1975>
Opening of Fujigaoka Hospital，affiliated with the School of Medicine.

<1977>
Establishment of School of Dentistry and Opening of the affiliated Dental Hospital.

<1978>
Opening of Toyosu Hospital affiliated with the School of Medicine.

<1983>
Establishment of Doctorate of Philosophy Course in the Dentistry Research Department of the Showa University Graduate School.

<1990>
Opening of Fujigaoka rehabilitation Hospital, affiliated with the School of Medicine.

<1998>
Establishment of Clinical Pharmacy Course in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Department of the Showa University Graduate School.

<1999>
Opening of Showa University East Hospital，affiliated with the School of Medicine.

<2001>
Opening of Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital, affiliated with the School of Medicine, and establishment of Showa University College of Medical Radiology.

<2002>
Establishment of Showa University School of Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences.
