The Cardiovascular Diseases Center was opened on March 24, 2014, when Showa University Koto Toyosu Hospital was opened. With the Department of Cardiology led by Professor Kaoru Tanno and the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery led by Professor and Center Director Hiroki Yamaguchi working as a team, we provide advanced and highly specialized treatments to all our patients with acquired heart diseases. As we have constructed a system for close coordination and cooperation between internists and surgeons, our heart team functions in the truest sense. We do our best in diagnosis and treatment every day to provide the best medicine to our patients while constantly searching for advanced medicine that will guide the next generation, with focus on the evidence provided in the latest guidelines.

Stroke Center

Neurology

Our Department is in charge of diagnosis and treatment of cerebral nervous diseases that do not require surgery in general. With medical advisors and specialists certified by the Japanese Society of Neurology, cerebral stroke specialists, neuroendovascular therapy medical advisors and specialists, and registered neurosonographers in our Department, we are capable of comprehensively conducting most of the acute phase diagnosis and treatment of cerebral nervous diseases within the Department. To provide quick diagnosis and treatment for patients who require emergency care, we provide emergency diagnosis and treatment independently at the Stroke Center throughout the day and night in coordination with the Department of Neurosurgery.

Neurosurgery

The Stroke Center is a department which was organized to provide diagnosis and treatment of cerebral stroke in the eastern Tokyo medical zone. The Department of Neurosurgery is in charge of surgical medicine. Meanwhile, trauma cases and diseases that occur due to abnormality in brain or blood vessels are handled in coordination with other related departments, as we also have responsibilities as a community hospital. We plan regular surgeries in cooperation with the intravascular surgery team and other staff of Showa University.

Emergency Center

General Medicine

The Department of General Medicine is in charge of emergency medicine centering on secondary emergency cases (emergency cases expected to require inpatient care) in general, in coordination with the doctors of other departments within the hospital. Our Department provides emergency treatment by comprehensively diagnosing the emergency patients. We also provide inpatient treatment immediately in cooperation with an appropriate specialist, if it is determined that specialized care is necessary. We introduce a specialized department within our hospital or another hospital or clinic in the region to visit on a later day if the patient does not require inpatient care but is allowed to go home.

Children’s Medical Center

Pediatrics

Pediatric Surgery

The Department of Pediatric Surgery conducts surgeries on fetuses before birth to children of age 15 (junior high school students).
Surgery methods which reduce the burden on children (endoscopic surgeries) have been developed in the last three decades, and most of the surgeries conducted at our Department are endoscopic.
Our Department also conducts surgeries on urological diseases in children in addition to digestive system diseases.
We have day surgeries for some types of diseases such as hernia. If admission is necessary, it is also possible for a parent to stay with his/her child at the hospital.

Perinatal Medical Center

Obstetrics

Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics, Neonatology and Gynecology was newly established when Showa University Koto Toyosu Hospital opened in March 2014 as a new university hospital.
We have established a system for handling a wide range of obstetrical and gynecological diseases 24/7 all year round, as a core hospital in the region in coordination with not only the doctors in the surrounding area but also Showa University Hospital (Shinagawa), Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital (Tsuzuki, Yokohama), and Showa University Fujigaoka Hospital (Aoba, Yokohama).
We have 15 full-time doctors, nine of whom are specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, and each of them is a highly skilled doctor in their respective medical specialty. In addition to diagnosis and treatment, we are also committed to education as a medical education institute under the philosophy of Showa University.
We will strive to ensure that our department of obstetrics and gynecology is trusted by the people of the community by providing compassionate medicine.
We look forward to caring for you.

Esophageal Cancer Center

Internal Medicine Center

Allergy and Respiratory Medicine

The Department of Allergy and Respiratory Medicine excels at the diagnosis and treatment of bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), etc. We also handle bronchoscopy, respiratory function testing, diagnosis and treatment of chronic lung diseases including infectious lung diseases and some types of interstitial pneumonia, as well as those listed below. We also handle CT-guided lung biopsy, bronchial angiography and embolization for the treatment of alveolar bleeding, etc., which cannot be done by our Department alone, in cooperation with the Department of Radiology, depending on the circumstances. We may ask the Showa University Hospital in Hatanodai or a nearby facility capable of surgical measures if the use of a thoracoscope, mediastinoscope, etc. becomes necessary.

Rheumatology and Clinical lmmunology

Our Department was newly established when this Hospital was opened in 2014.
We provide consistent care from diagnosis of numerous collagen diseases including rheumatoid arthritis to its treatment, treatment of complications and outpatient and inpatient treatment. A feature of this Department is that we provide diagnosis and treatment using joint ultrasound mainly on rheumatoid arthritis, which accounts for the largest number of patients. Ultrasonography is safe even for patients who are not sure about their physical condition, as it has no risk of complications. We also offer special obstetric outpatient services, which is rare even in Tokyo. Its purpose is to provide support for patients with collagen diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis so that they can safely become pregnant and give birth. We also provide consultations to male patients.

Diabetes,Metabolism and Endocrinology

In addition to handling type 1 and type 2 diabetes, our Department has established prenatal outpatient services, which specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of gestational diabetes and pregnancy in diabetics, in close cooperation with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and conducts blood glucose management for pregnant patients and follow-ups after birth. In our outpatient services, we handle a wide range from borderline diabetes cases to diabetic cases with complications, and actively provide emergency inpatient hospital care and inpatient education for diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar hyperglycemic syndrome, and severe hypoglycemia, which are acute complications. We also respond to the requests from other departments within the Hospital for perioperative blood glucose management.
To ensure strict blood glucose management, we actively introduce treatments, which mainly consist of intensive insulin therapy, regardless of whether the care is provided as outpatient or inpatient, and offer the latest diabetes treatments including the combination of 24-hour continuous blood glucose monitoring and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion.
We also provide diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases in general, including thyroid diseases such as Basedow disease, pituitary diseases, and adrenal diseases, while using various hormone loading tests and image examinations.

Nephrology

The Department of Nephrology handles kidney diseases in general, and provides diagnosis and treatment of proteinuria, hematuria, primary and delayed kidney diseases, diseases related to kidney damage, diseases that require blood purifying treatments or apheresis, water-electrolyte imbalance, high blood pressure, etc. If a patient has been referred to us for having an acute disease, we refer the patient back to their original doctor once their condition has stabilized. For chronic kidney diseases, we implement hospital–clinic cooperation in which we continuously propose the appropriate drugs, diet therapy, and exercise therapy for the stage of the disease and complications.

Medical Oncology

Our Department mainly provides drug treatment of progressive recurring digestive cancers and postoperative recurrence prevention. We also diagnose and treat malignant tumors whose treatment methods are wide-ranging, such as advanced lung cancer, advanced metastatic breast cancer and advanced double cancer.
Outpatient anti-cancer therapy has become possible today, thanks to the advances in drugs with measures to control the adverse effects of anticancer agents (cancericidal agents, molecular targeted drugs, hormone treatment drugs, immune checkpoint inhibitors, etc.). We provide inpatient treatment when commencing chemotherapy for the purpose of education (medication counseling, learning how to cope with adverse effects, etc.). In addition, we prepare the CV port for almost all cases of patients who receive chemotherapy by intravenous drip to prevent escape into the skin during peripheral vessel administration of anticancer agents. We coordinate with the Department of Radiation Oncology when combination with radiation therapy is necessary. Since drug treatment of advanced cancer can take a long period, we provide support for various physical and social issues caused by the continuation of treatment, in addition to the drug treatment itself, in cooperation with other medical staff including nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, nutritionists, and MSW.

Rehabilitation Medicine

Dermatology

Four dermatologists handle outpatient and inpatient diagnosis and treatment. Outpatient services are open every day from Monday to Saturday.
All types of biological preparations are available for atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, pustulosis palmaris et plantaris, and hidradenitis suppurativa, depending on the indication. We treat foot troubles such as skin ulcers caused by arteriosclerosis, phlebeurysm, diabetes, etc., ingrown nail, and corn through team medicine consisting of footcare nurses and prosthetists. Inpatient treatment of bedsores and intractable skin ulcers is also possible, and we provide intensive treatment by the bedsore treatment team consisting of rehabilitation doctors, plastic surgeons, certified nurses for wound, ostomy and continence care, pharmacists and nutritionists. All types of devices are available for negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) including models that can be used at home.
We conduct excimer phototherapy on psoriasis vulgaris, pustulosis palmaris et plantaris, vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis. Surgeries are mainly done as outpatient surgeries. We place importance on activities of daily living and quality of life, and try to provide medicine centered on the patient in cooperation with medical institutes and staff, including treatments at home depending on the lifestyle.

Psychiatry

Mental symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, depression and restlessness can often develop during inpatient care, and halt the treatment of the original physical disease. In such cases, we provide liaison consultation activities (liaison is a French word meaning "cooperation") for the patients who are admitted to the hospital so that we can provide support for both mental and physical recovery as a part of team medicine in cooperation with the doctors of other departments such as internal medicine and surgery as well as other staff. We perform psychiatric diagnosis while taking into consideration the physical, mental and environmental aspects of the patients with various complications, and provide treatment after carefully explaining to the patient the effects and risks of adverse events if a drug therapy is selected.

Radiology

Radiation Oncology

We conduct adaptation determination on new patients for radiation therapy, their treatment planning, and follow-ups during the treatment period and after treatment as outpatient services. As treatment equipment, we have one external irradiation device (LINAC), a CT for treatment planning, and a three-dimensional treatment planning device, and we also actively provide high-precision radiation therapies such as intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic radiation therapy, and image-guided radiation therapy in addition to the normal radiation therapy.
We also conduct iodine 125 permanent implantation brachytherapy on prostate cancer in cooperation with the Department of Urology. For stereotactic radiation of the lungs, we provide high-precision radiation therapy while using the latest respiratory movement management system.

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine conducts histopathology, operative rapid diagnosis, and cytodiagnosis by preparing samples from tissues or organs collected or removed during endoscopic examination, surgery, etc., or from cells, etc. collected in outpatient care or operating rooms. Pathologists observe the samples under a microscope and make the final diagnosis (pathological diagnosis) necessary for diagnosis and treatment. In operative rapid diagnosis, we prepare a sample of a frozen section and make a pathological diagnosis on the lesion, determination of stump, presence of metastasis to lymph nodes, etc. during surgery. We send the results to the surgeon in the operating room within about 15 minutes after the sample arrives at the department, thus helping to decide the operation or treatment policy. We also conduct pathologic autopsy in addition to the above pathological diagnosis, and aim to improve the quality of medicine by verifying the results of medical care and nursing.

Surgery Center

Thoracic Surgery

Breast Surgery

  • Our Department provides diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and mammary gland diseases that are difficult to manage in general.
  • With experienced mammary gland specialists at the center, a closely coordinated team of staff from other related departments and multiple specialties work on mammary gland diagnosis and treatment.
  • Maximizing the advantages of opening on weekends, we provide medicine that is best suited to the lifestyles and wishes of patients in a fast-moving schedule.

Orthopedic Surgery

Ophthalmology

Our Hospital provides diagnosis and treatment of all types of eye diseases, including cataract, glaucoma, vitreoretinal diseases, and trauma. We conduct surgeries as quickly as possible for retinal detachment, eye trauma, etc. As outpatient services, we can handle the diagnosis of a wide range of eye diseases, equipped with optical coherence tomography (OCT), perimeters (Humphrey field analyzer and Goldmann perimeter), fluorescein angiography, electroretinogram, multifocal electroretinogram, color perception test (anomaloscope), major amblyoscope (synoptophore), and pattern laser device. We offer both inpatient surgery and day surgery for cataract. While the choice basically depends on the patient’s wish, inpatient treatment may be recommended in some cases, depending on the conditions of the eyes as well as physical condition. Although we do not implant multifocal intraocular lenses, we do offer LENTIS Comfort. We also focus on vitreous surgeries for retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, etc. Vitreous surgeries are generally done as inpatient surgeries at our Hospital.

Urology

Our Department has various equipment for treating prostate cancer, as well as the staff and facilities to conduct from screening with serum PSA value measurement to diagnosis with high-precision prostate biopsy combining MRI images, and then performing minimally invasive treatments. As an option in minimally invasive treatments, we have handled one of the largest number of cases in Japan and achieved good treatment outcomes with iodine 125 permanent implantation brachytherapy (seed treatment). Regarding robot-assisted surgeries, the surgeon in charge at our Hospital can perform the operation at Showa University Hospital.
We offer endoscopic surgeries of urinary organs (laparoscopic surgeries) for most cases of renal and adrenal tumors.
For operation on prostatic hypertrophy, we mainly conduct holmium laser nucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), which is the latest technique.
We excel in endoscopic laser lithotripsy (TUL/PNL), which is intended to bring about the efficient and complete elimination of the stones in the treatment of urinary calculus, and have had favorable treatment outcomes even for intractable urinary calculi.
The outpatient consultation rooms are equipped with various testing devices including flexible cytoscopy, ultrasonic diagnostic equipment, uroflowmetry equipment, and neurologic examination equipment, allowing us to conduct tests on a wide range of urologic diseases.

Otorhinolaryngology

Anesthesiology

Eight anesthesiologists, five dental anesthesiologists, and a few part-time doctors are responsible for intraoperative care. It has been more than 5 years since the Hospital was founded, and the number of surgeries is increasing steadily. Approximately 5,800 surgeries were performed last year, and the number of cases the Department of Anesthesiology managed was approximately 4,100. A characteristic of our Hospital is that we offer outpatient consultation on weekends and holidays. The use of operating rooms is not exceptional, and scheduled surgeries are also performed on weekends and holidays; this is a social experiment to maximize the use of operating rooms as a medical resource in which large capital investments have been made. It also contributes to the leveling of bed utilization rate (mitigates the lower utilization on weekends). In fact, approximately 20% of all surgeries were performed on weekends last year.
If there is no urgency and the patient is expected to be discharged quickly after the operation, it is possible to minimize the effects on going to school or work by having the surgery on weekends or consecutive holidays. We consider that offering such a choice is part of the services of a hospital.

Dental Anesthesiology

Surgery・Plastic Surgery

The Department of Plastic Surgery is dedicated to esthetically (appearance-wise) and functionally improving deformations and defects in the body that are either congenital or acquired. We mainly provide diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities on the body surface from the head to the hands and feet. Specifically, we treat congenital abnormalities or tumors on the face, hands or feet, broken bones in the face, repair of trauma, burn injuries or scars on the hands, feet and face, etc. Our Hospital especially focuses on breast reconstruction and ptosis (having difficulty seeing, with the eyelids lowering too much).
We also specialize in cosmetic surgery, although the medical expenses for this are not covered by insurance. We urge any patients who have concerns to seek a consultation with us.

Dentistry and Oral Surgery

Our Department provides diagnosis and treatment of diseases in and around the oral cavity, and the diseases handled are quite diverse. We perform surgeries under inpatient management and general anesthesia in coordination with the Department of Dental Anesthesiology depending on the type of disease. We also perform appropriate procedures for patients with various underlying diseases, taking into consideration their systemic condition. Furthermore, if symptoms related to the oral cavity may be expected for perioperative patients who are having surgeries at our Hospital, etc., we provide diagnosis and treatment for the purpose of improving the oral cavity environment starting on the day before surgery.
We hope to provide appropriate diagnosis and treatment while responding to the diverse requests from doctors in the region. To provide our patients with safe and secure medicine, we perform consultations in coordination with other medical and dental departments as well as the community. In principle, we conduct consultations of first-time patients by appointment only. If you have a referral, please contact the Regional Cooperation Office of this Hospital and get an appointment for consultation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Department.
