Director of SHOWA Medical University Karasuyama Hospital
Thank you for visiting the SHOWA Medical University Karasuyama Hospital website.
The SHOWA Medical University Karasuyama Hospital is one of the oldest Japanese hospitals specialized in psychiatry and mental health, due to celebrate its 100th anniversary of establishment in 2026.
Since the organization became part of SHOWA Medical University in 1951, we have been actively committed to supporting the social rehabilitation of mental and psychiatric patients. In 1963, “AKANE KAI” was formed in response to the wishes of the families of the hospital’s patients and also of its medical professionals. In 2013, “KARASUYAMA KOCHI NO KAI”, a society for the families of people with neurodevelopmental disorders, was newly formed.
Over the years from the end of the Showa era through the Heisei era, we worked on renovating the existing hospital facilities and also on providing mental health care for elderly people and patients with alcohol problems, as well as opening and increasing emergency inpatient psychiatric facilities and building specialized inpatient facilities for stress care treatment. In 2008, we became the first medical institution in Japan to open a specialized outpatient clinic and day-care services to support adult patients with neurodevelopmental disorders. In 2014, we opened a Medical Institute of Developmental Disabilities Research, also the first of its kind in Japan . Since then, we have received over 8,000 people for consultation concerning developmental disorders. Now, our Medical Institute of Developmental Disabilities Research is officially recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as a research hub for developmental disorders.
Later, from the end of the Heisei era through the Reiwa era, we started outpatient services specialized in the treatment of not only alcohol addiction but also other addictions such as narcotics, gambling, Internet and gaming addictions. Now, the hospital is one of the medical institutions designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) for the treatment of addictions (substance-related and gambling disorders), and is one of the hub medical institutions designated by the TMG for the treatment of addictions (gambling disorders).
We will always be a hospital with a brave pioneering spirit, open to the whole of society and accessible by anybody in need.
Under the slogan adopted by the founder of our university, “Shisei Ikkan (always put yourself in others’ shoes and be sincere to everybody)”, we do our best in receiving and treating patients who visit our hospital every day.
Thank you very much for your continued support.
