About Us
Message -Director of Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital-
Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital was founded on April 1, 2001 as a core medical facility responsible for providing acute-phase patient care in the northern medical district of Yokohama City, under a municipal initiative to solicit privately owned and operated hospitals, in the city’s scheme of creating six medical care zones as part of its strategy for medical services. Time has flown by since then.
When our hospital first opened, we only had 428 beds available for inpatients. But our subsequent hiring of nursing staff allowed us to start offering all general beds that are available and also build additional facilities such as a GCU for pediatric patients and a maternity center for obstetric patients. As of today, our hospital has 689 beds, out of a total of 3,185 beds that are currently owned by Showa University.
In addition to the new patient care we started offering in recent years with our new PET/CT scanners, outpatient chemotherapy room, specialized outpatient clinic for women, and outpatient dental surgery, we opened the thyroid gland center and the female pelvic health center last year, as part of the hospital’s initiative to improve its specialized treatment of thyroid disease and to start providing medical intervention for female-specific age-induced conditions such as urinary incontinence, in order to properly address personal health issues for which people were previously unable to receive consultations.
The hospital has also started taking active measures to improve dental care for people with disabilities.
As part of the workstyle reform for medical professionals being implemented by Showa University across its entire organization, a variable work-hour system (i.e., shift work) has been introduced to reduce the extra burden placed on medical workers when providing medical care outside regular work hours.
Under the concept that each individual working for our institution is part of one coherent team and should act accordingly, all of us working at Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital are striving to create a medical center that is deeply trusted and relied upon by those who come to us, while ensuring medical safety and improving patient care and employee satisfaction.
As a university hospital, our institution is committed to the advancement of medicine, not only by providing education and guidance to resident doctors and senior doctors in training but also by offering training and seminars to our medical staff to maintain and improve their motivation and manners, in our continuous effort to cultivate the next generation of skilled medical practitioners.
Under the concept of “team-based medical care,” the patients are always at the center of our attention. The doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, dieticians, physical therapists, social workers, clerks, and other medical staff all work closely with each other to provide optimal care to each patient, while other staff at the hospital also work effectively in a well-coordinated manner.
This team-based medical approach is only possible with the cooperation of patients and their families, and we sincerely ask for your understanding and support.
The staff of Northern Yokohama Hospital perform their respective roles every day in a united effort, with passion and enthusiasm for our institution, and I greatly value their hard work and dedication. I also intend to improve our cooperative relationships with local medical associations and other medical facilities, so that our institution can admit patients more swiftly and coordinate their discharge schedules more efficiently.
Our institution is committed to fulfilling its purpose as a designated core hospital in the area, while developing good relationships with each and every patient we care for.
Thank you for your constant support for our hospital.
