When the university founder, Dr. Shusuke Kamijo, chose Shisei Ikkan as the school ethos, he was surely aiming to cultivate compassionate and benevolent clinical practitioners who were open to different values held by others. This spirit has been well-preserved and practiced over the years at our school, which has now grown into an outstanding comprehensive medical university with four different schools. At SHOWA Medical University, we not only teach our students essential knowledge and technical skills but also provide a learning community where they can enrich their humanity and acquire strong communication skills. These are the roles that  SHOWA Medical University is determined to fulfill for the good of society.

For example, in 1965 we started fully residential education for all first-year students at the Fujiyoshida Campus. When first-year students from the different schools live together under the same roof, they learn compassion and gain a spirit of cooperation during this crucial period of personal growth, which is a fundamental requirement in team-based medicine today. It also fosters a sense of humanity that will be essential when they later become healthcare professionals. As a student who once shared the same dormitory, I can attest to the learning benefits that take place in such an environment.

We also have eight attached hospitals that play a very important role. They are not only medical institutions serving the local communities but also function as a crucial educational environment for SHOWA Medical University, which has the mission of cultivating good citizenship and professionalism our students so that they will be able to contribute to society. SHOWA Medical University is constantly recruiting highly skilled medical professionals as clinical instructors in order to enhance its function.

With a history going back to 1928, SHOWA Medical University has a large number of parents-and-children alumni, and there are even three generations of families who have attended the university. This is evidence that SHOWA Medical University’s philosophy of education that we have practiced since our inception is greatly valued, and we are proud that society has high expectations for the educational outcomes of students.

To meet such expectations, we will continuously work together to reform and improve SHOWA Medical University so that all our faculty and staff members can take pride in being part of the best medical university in Japan.
