President of SHOWA Medical University

SHOWA Medical University President Tadashi Hisamitsu
It is a great honor and privilege to serve as the 14th President of SHOWA Medical University. From the moment I knew of the appointment, I have felt a tremendous sense of responsibility. I will make utmost effort to perform my duties well, and I hope everyone will join me in the continuous endeavor to make SHOWA Medical University thrive as a great institution.
From its inception as Showa Medical College in 1928, the university founder Dr. Shusuke Kamijo emphasized the concept of Shisei Ikkan, which became the school ethos. We have made great progress as an academic institution since then, aiming to contribute to society by “developing healthcare professionals who can serve patients with a constant empathy and sincere devotion.” This ethos still lives on 90 years later, equally in each of the fields of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and rehabilitation sciences, in which students pursue their respective studies. At SHOWA Medical University, which is now a comprehensive medical university, the spirit of Shisei Ikkan is shared and valued among students, faculty, and staff members alike.
If SHOWA Medical University were a garden, then its theme would be Shisei Ikkan. What used to be a tiny yard has expanded gradually over time, and a variety of flowers and trees are now growing here. There are four distinct plantations now, mixing with each other and jointly forming this single garden.
A university is an institution with the dual role of educating its students and conducting research. In order for our university to become a vibrant garden of learning, where excellent accomplishments in teaching bloom like flowers and research activities bear fruit in the form of useful scientific findings and discoveries, we must not only prune our plantations and fertilize the soil but also perform grafting and even some transplantation, if circumstances require, to sustain the garden’s constant growth. I believe that it is of utmost importance to take care of the garden and cure any problems found among the plants so that their branches and leaves will be able to grow well with their own vitality and strength.
SHOWA Medical University currently operates eight hospitals, four research centers, and a number of other ancillary facilities, where our students are trained to become healthcare professionals, and research activities are promoted. I believe we must improve the level of activity taking place at each of those facilities and also promote tighter coordination and collaboration among them, for SHOWA Medical University to continue to evolve as a thriving academic institution.
Having just entered this new era of Reiwa, the campuses of SHOWA Medical University are keenly anticipating new winds of change coming our way. I hereby pledge to devote myself to help the university continue on its path of positive spirit and vibrancy, with your support and constructive input.
