Specialty of Our Education

Inter-disciplinary education in a true comprehensive medical university leads to the cultivation of reliable medical practitioners.
The defining and unique features of education at SHOWA Medical University include our emphasis on inter-disciplinary education that takes advantage of being a comprehensive medical university, and a vast array of clinical training opportunities through our eight attached hospitals. Students can gain extensive and professional on-site clinical experience. In addition, by continuing to work in the hospitals, the teaching staff can provide thorough instruction that is up to date and highly detailed. These features all lead to higher than national average passing rates on the national board exams for our students.
The starting point for education of all students in the four schools (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing and rehabilitation sciences) at SHOWA Medical University is the Fujiyoshida Campus, which is situated at the base of Mt. Fuji. A fully-residential campus, students share rooms in mixed groups from all four undergraduate schools and follow a curriculum in which they study and participate in practical training together. This provides the optimal environment for honing communication, cooperation, and compassion, which are essential for team medical care. Dating back half a century, it is a unique approach that makes full use of SHOWA Medical University's characteristic features.
Another unique feature of education at SHOWA Medical University is our use of problem-based learning (PBL), in which mixed groups of students from each of the schools tackle assignments in a variety of clinical practice situations, with a particular focus on our attached hospitals.
With Shisei Ikkan being the founding spirit, the consistent social mission of SHOWA Medical University is "intellectual production", "cultivation of personality" and "pursuit of life science". We pour our effort into the nurturing of human resources with sound knowledge, skill and personality, in order to deliver quality patient-centered medical care.
