Important Information and Procedures
Thank you for your interest in SHOWA Medical University’s Exchange Student Program. Currently, the schools of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy accept international exchange students for short-term clinical clerkships and hospital observations. Below is general information about our exchange program. However, each school has slightly different information about their particular exchange program, so please click on the school that your are interested in below and also read that information carefully.School of Medicine

-- Please note: Due to Japanese law, international students are not allowed to provide treatment to patients. Therefore, the primary form of education in this program is observation. --
International students are not required to speak Japanese to participate in this program, but it is the primary language spoken in the hospitals and campus.

General Information
Eligibility
Generally, only undergraduate students from an university that has a sister-school or signed exchange agreement with one of our schools(check International Exchange page for the current list) and who have started clinical
training.
Training Period and Length
Depends on exchange agreement with university and the school (medicine, dentistry, or pharmacy).
We cannot host exchange students during the following periods:
-- Japan’s “Golden Week” holiday (usually April 29~May 5)
-- New Year’s holiday (usually December 29~January 4)

We try to place students in departments based on their preference and/or course requirements of their home university, but not every department is available. To see a list of departments that may accept exchange students, please check the Departments Hosting Exchange Students page
Expenses/Housing
There are no tuition fees and free housing (including utilities) is available.
However, students are responsible for all travel expenses (including airfare to/from Japan) and all food expenses and consumables.

Application Time
Start your application at least 4 months before desired start time.

Application Process
The staff/faculty responsible for student exchange at your university or school should first contact us atint-exc@ofc.showa-u.ac.jp) to directly nominate you for our exchange program. In the email,
they should provide your name, email address, desired training period, and desired department(s) (if you’ve already decided). We will then contact you directly to explain and start the application process.
Application Materials
Please submit the following documents to theInternational Exchange Center
- Application form
- Recommendation letter
- CV with a passport-size photograph
- Transcripts
- Copy of passport
- Immunization records form (titer results, proof of COVID-19 vaccination (at least 3 doses) and test for tuberculosis)
- Health insurance (traveler's insurance)
- Medical malpractice insurance
- Identification photo (for student ID card)
- Flight schedule

For students who are not from a partner university but are interested in this program, we encourage you to ask your university to contact us about creating an exchange agreement. If our dental school is also interested in an exchange agreement with your
university, we may be able to accept you before the actual agreement is signed.

Exchange Students’ Activities
Our pharmacy school traditionally creates a Special Exchange Student Program for exchange students that involves research, clinical, and cultural activities both on- and off-campus.
For a select few exchange students, there is the possibility of observership in the Department of Hospital Pharmaceutics.
