Showa University 90th Anniversary Ceremony and Celebration

About Us

On November 10, Showa University held a ceremony and celebration reception to commemorate the 90th anniversary of its founding. Showa University’s 90th anniversary occurred on November 15, 2018, but the ceremony and reception were held this year in conjunction with the completion of “Showa University Kamijo Memorial Hall”, which was part of the commemorative project of Showa University’s anniversary.
About 720 people, mainly faculty and staff who contributed to the 90th anniversary commemorative project, attended the anniversary ceremony held at Showa University Kamijo Memorial Hall. Dr. Oguchi, Chairman of the Board of Directors, said at the ceremony, “Starting from our founder, Dr. Shusuke Kamijo, and the many past teachers, through their efforts we welcome today’s prosperity.
From today, with the aim of celebrating our 100-year anniversary, we will think of ways to become a superior university and do our best to aim high.”
In addition, at the event President Tadashi Hisamitsu and former President Ryohei Koide gave speeches; a special award of excellence and a letter of appreciation for supporting the opening of Kamijo Memorial Hall was presented to those who had made significant contributions to the university; and Chairman Oguchi gave a commemorative lecture entitled “Let the 90th anniversary come”.Prior to the anniversary ceremony, a concert was performed by the Showa University Kamijo Memorial Choir and Showa University Orchestra. The song was Beethoven's “Symphony No. 9, 4th Movement” and was conducted by Toshiyuki Kamioka, a professor at the University of Music Saar (Hochschule für Musik Saar) in Germany and Music Director of the New Japan Philharmonic. After the concert, a demonstration of Kamijo Memorial Hall’s main curtain was held. Based on the original picture “黎明” (Reimei) by Yoshiyuki Nakano, a Japanese-style painter and Professor Emeritus at Tama Art University (which signed a comprehensive cooperative agreement with Showa University), the main curtain was introduced by Professor Takashi Ashitomi, another faculty from the same university as Professor Nakano.
The celebration reception was held at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa and around 1100 people – including those who attended the anniversary ceremony, members of various organizations that have supported Showa University, and others – attended this event.
After receiving a congratulatory message from Naotaka Fukui (Chairman, Association of Private Universities of Japan) as a representative of the guests in attendance, a “kagami-biraki” ceremony (in which the lid of a sake barrel is broken open by a wooden mallet) was done with many guests for good luck. During the celebration, “Showa University Cheer Song” and “Showa University School Song” were performed, and both President Hisamitsu and Chairman Oguchi were each seen conducting the choir. Finally, everything came to a successful conclusion.
